We appear to have our first major injury of the pre-draft process. Washington cornerback Sidney Jones was going through his Pro Day reps, and late in the session he went down with a lower leg injury. Yahoo! NFL writer Eric Edholm is reporting a source texted him saying it is a torn Achilles.
Mike Mayock ranked Jones as the top cornerback in the 2017 NFL Draft class, ahead of Ohio State’s Marshon Lattimore. Others had them swapped, but Jones was a consensus first round draft pick prior to the injury. The Achilles tear at this point in the process likely means he will sit out his rookie season and effectively be a medical redshirt.
This makes it all but certain Lattimore is the first cornerback off the board. The question now is how far Jones slips as he begins the rehab process. It is entirely impossible to predict where he might go. Jaylon Smith tore up his knee in his bowl game, and went to the Cowboys with the third pick of the second round. The timing is different, but it was expected that Smith would miss the whole season. Maybe a team is willing to roll the dice late in the first round on a guy they can stash for a year?
