The San Francisco 49ers were busy this week, signing 11 unrestricted free agents. That combined with the three free agents added before the start of free agency brings the roster total to 67.
The team still hold ten draft picks, and have to fill out their 90-man roster. As you can see below, there are still plenty of holes to fill. We know they will add at least two more quarterbacks. There is room for another couple running backs. They don’t have any backup guards following Marcus Martin’s release. John Theus and Norman Price are their only backup tackles.
On the defensive side of the ball, they have bodies for every role, but clearly there are plenty of places to upgrade. And we don’t know the specifics on who will fill some of the roles in the new-look defense. Will Jimmie Ward move to free safety? Who will handle the Leo role on the edge? How will Eric Reid and Jaquiski Tartt be utilized? The 49ers need to add talent, but they also need to answer some questions about the existing defensive talent.
