Marquise Goodwin still believes he’s the fastest player in the league

New, comments

John Ross may have run a 4.22 but Goodwin thinks he could could beat him in a foot race

There’s definitely not a lack of confidence with new San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Marquise Goodwin, who spent his previous four seasons in Buffalo. The former Olympian is willing to put his speed up against anyone’s, including Washington’s John Ross, who just ran a 4.22 at the combine. Goodwin ran a 4.27 at the 2013 NFL Combine.

Not only did Goodwin offer the best quote of free agency, he also spoke about himself in the third person. Sounds like he will be one of the more interesting personalities to cover.

What was the recruiting pitch to you?

I don’t want to put any words into anyone’s mouths. That’s a question to ask John and Kyle, but for the most part they just wanted me here. That was most important to me. Somebody who wanted me as much as they do and I look forward to being a part of this offense and helping this team win.

How close did it get with Washington?

That’s not important right now. What’s important is that I’m a 49er now so I look forward to that.

Have you ever not been the fastest guy on your football team?

Never. Never. Not the league either. So I know that there’s a lot of questions out there and I’m going to put that out there. Yes I’m still the fastest in the league and I’m willing to prove that.

You saw what John Ross ran at the combine?

Oh, I did.

You think you could win a race with him?

Oh, I don’t think, I don’t go into situations thinking, I know.

Do you think he’d beat most of us running backwards?

I don’t know. I haven’t seen what y’all got in the tank so I don’t know.

I do. You would.

Who is the second fastest player in the NFL?

It doesn’t even matter. Second place doesn’t matter.

Do you feel you have something to prove?

To myself, the only thing I have to prove is myself right, that I’m capable of doing everything that everybody else is out there doing, top receivers. All I gotta do is continue to work hard, continue to do the right thing, be in the right positions and be where I’m supposed to be.

Has it been frustrating?

Of course it gets frustrating but that’s part of being on the team. You don’t always get it how you want it. When you’re invested like I am, when you’re a team player like I am. A lot of the time statistics don’t matter. One of my good friends pointed out stats are like seeing a girl in a bikini, it shows a lot but it doesn’t show everything. So I hold a lot of truth to that. So I look forward to whatever is in store for the 49ers and myself.

Your yards per catch average is pretty high.

I’m not even sure. For myself it’s not even about that for me, as long as I help get wins, I’m a winner. See my last name ‘good’ ‘win.’ it’s that way for a reason. I enjoy winning. I enjoy being around guys who like winning and that’s what’s most important.

The team was challenged in winning last year so did you come here because of the new regime?

Mos def. For guys like Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch who believed in me enough. They had other options. They had other guys that they could have brought in but they chose Marquise Goodwin for whatever reason and so I feel like that’s my purpose. My purpose is to be here and I’m going to make the most of my opportunity. I’m going to do it not only for myself but for my family, everybody back home and for this organization and for the people of San Francisco.

Other than your speed, what are the qualities you bring to the team?

Attitude. Hard work. Desire to win.
