Golden Nuggets: Being Aggressive In Free Agency

Wednesday, March 15th, 2017 edition of the Golden Nuggets, a daily compilation of San Francisco 49ers links from the Internet

The aggressive moves in free agency led the San Francisco 49ers to sign 11 players in the 1st 48 hours of the free agency period. A few of those signings could include potential starters in the upcoming season. Even with all the signings, the 49ers sit at over $73 million left in cap space. The roster currently sits at 67 players, which means 23 other players are needed to get the roster to 90 player limit. Ten players will be added in the draft, so another 13 will come from free agency and undrafted players .

John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan brought in players that fit what they were looking to build on the field. A few, including Brian Hoyer and Pierre Garcon, are already familiar with Kyle so their transition should be seamless. The rest of the pickups are good additions that did not cost too much of their salary cap. The money they do not spend this offseason will carry over to next season, at which time the 49ers can spend the money to bring Kirk Cousins, if he walks from Washington.

John Lynch has been more aggressive than former GM Trent Baalke ever was. While John added 11 players in the 1st week of free agency, Trent only signed 11 free agents total in the 1st weeks from 2012-2016. The most important part about the signings were that they are not big signings, but they are signings that fit what the 49ers are trying to do. Add those signings to the players that the 49ers are expected to draft in the upcoming month and the 49ers could put themselves in good position to get back to relevancy in a season or 2.
