Marcus Cromartie only remaining 49ers free agent getting much interest

New, comments

The 49ers have a lot of free agents on the market, but few are getting nibbles.

The San Francisco 49ers had a whole host of free agents remaining on their roster following the season, and they added to that group when they chose not to tender any of their restricted free agents. One member of that latter group was defensive back Marcus Cromartie, and he appears to be the one of the only free agents getting any significant interest.

Matt Barrows is reporting that Cromartie visited with the Detroit Lions last weekend, and there is interest from the Philadelphia Eagles, Seattle Seahawks, and New York Jets. Cromartie can play both cornerback and safety, and was a regular on special teams.

The 49ers have been busy in free agency, but have not addressed several areas of need. One such position is running back. Barrows wrote that, “[t]he 49ers are keeping their eye on some of their own free agents, including receiver Rod Streater and running backs DuJuan Harris and Shaun Draughn.”

After Carlos Hyde, the group includes Mike Davis and Raheem Mostert. Kyle Juszczyk will get work out of the running back position, but they need another back to complement Hyde. Harris and Draughn are low ceiling guys that have proven they can do more than Mike Davis or Raheem Mostert. The team could still make a move in the upcoming draft, but if not, I could see one of the two backs returning.

The 49ers have a lengthy list of free agents still looking for work. Phil Dawson is the only player scheduled for free agency who has signed with a new team (Arizona). Torrey Smith (Philadelphia) and Antoine Bethea (Arizona) were released shortly before the new league year, and worked out deals fairly quickly.

Gerald Hodges had a visit with the Kansas City Chiefs, but nothing came of it. He could be a solid depth option, but teams seem content to wait on him. I am a little bit surprised Glenn Dorsey has not gotten a nibble thus far. I could see some of the teams in the Dontari Poe market potentially looking at hime after Poe signs and then maybe Johnathan Hankins signs as well.

Part of the problem for veteran free agents is most teams are content to fill rotational roles with rookies. If any of these players sign, it likely will not happen for at least a couple weeks. Teams might look for bodies for OTAs, and then additional bodies for training camp.
