Early contract details for Brock Coyle, Don Jones suggest little guaranteed money

The 49ers signed two special teamers to inexpensive deals. We have some initial details.

Fooch’s update: Aaron Wilson has details on Don Jones’ contract. It’s a little more than I expected. It includes a $250,000 signing bonus, with $500,000 of his 2017 salary fully guaranteed.

2017 cap hit: $1,000,000

Base: $775,000
Pro-rated SB: $125,000
Roster Bonus: $100,000
Pro Bowl incentive: $200,000

2018 cap hit: $1,200,000

Base: $975,000
Pro-rated SB: $125,000
Roster Bonus: $100,000
Pro Bowl incentive: $200,000

The San Francisco 49ers have processed through their 11 free agent contracts, but we have been waiting on a few last details. Two of the final signings were linebacker Brock Coyle and defensive back Don Jones. Both have been primarily special teams players, but Coyle brings some knowledge of the Seattle Seahawks defense, which could prove useful.

We don’t have full details on either contract, but for the time being, we know their base salaries. Coyle signed a one year deal with a base salary of $1 million. Jones signed a two-year deal with base salaries of $775,000 and $975,000. We don’t know if either received a signing bonus or any additional bonuses or incentives.

One thing we can infer from these is the value the 49ers place on the two players. Coyle has three credited seasons, which means his minimum salary can be $690,000. I doubt his $1 million salary is guaranteed, but it still suggests the 49ers think they can get a little something more than just a camp body out of Coyle.

Jones has four credited seasons, which means his 2017 minimum salary can be $775,000, and his 2018 minimum salary can be $790,000. That means he is getting paid the league minimum in 2017, and a bump up from that in 2018. We don’t know if he got a signing bonus, but it seems likely that he will be competing primarily for a special teams role.
