The San Francisco 49ers have a lot of options at their disposal when it comes to quarterbacks in the 2017 NFL Draft. There have been reports Kyle Shanahan is not super high on any of this year’s prospects, but another six weeks of film evaluation coupled with private workouts very well could change his mind.
If the 49ers do decide to draft a quarterback in the first round, North Carolina’s Mitch Trubisky is a regular mention. We’ve seen him numerous times in mock drafts, and he is ranked by many as the best quarterback in this year’s draft class.
NFL Films Senior Producer Greg Cosell is evaluating this year’s prospects, and on Thursday he published his scouting report for Trubisky. He sees him as a quarterback who has a lot of skills, but will need to work on his development as a pocket QB. Cosell sees need for improvement in his footworks and mechanics, but cites plus accuracy and solid mobility.
I am skeptical that the 49ers pick up a QB with the No. 2 pick, but if Kyle Shanahan did decide he wanted one of these top options, well, so be it. He gets plenty of benefit of the doubt given his resume. But based on everything we’ve heard thus far, I think we see the team wait for someone on day two or three.
