The San Francisco 49ers are doing as much work as they can on Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson. General manager John Lynch told KNBR the team will host a private workout with Watson and another NFL team next week. Now, Watson’s agent is saying the quarterback will be one of the 30 official visits the 49ers are allowed to host in Santa Clara, per Matt Barrows.
The 49ers have a lot of decisions to make at the No. 2 pick, and quarterbacks are likely a prominent part of that process. Lynch said the team will spend next week checking out some of the quarterbacks, including observing Mitch Trubisky and DeShone Kizer at their Pro Days. There was no word of a private workout with either of them.
Additional workouts and meetings could happen with other quarterbacks. Agent Leigh Steinberg tweeted that 13 teams have already inquired about conducting a private workout with Texas Tech QB Patrick Mahomes. The Texas Tech Pro Day is scheduled for March 31, after which teams can conduct private visits with Mahomes. There is no word on if the 49ers are one of the 13 teams, but it seems like a decent possibility.
One interesting aspect of the team’s trips next week is that John Lynch did not include Kyle Shanahan in the group that will be checking out quarterbacks. Maybe he already knows what he needs to know about the prospects? Maybe he is waiting for the private visits to do his work with them? I’m not entirely sure, but it is an interesting aspect of all this.
