It has been a fairly quiet offseason for most of the San Francisco 49ers free agents, but we can add a visit to the list. The New York Jets announced on Saturday that wide receiver Quinton Patton visited with the team.
Patton took some time to get going in his NFL career after the 49ers selected him in the fourth round of the 2013 NFL Draft. He had six receptions for 78 yards in his first two seasons combined. He struggled to get going as injuries sidelined him multiple times. In 2015, he finally played the entire season, and had 30 receptions for 394 yards and a touchdown. In 2016, he played in 14 games and had 37 receptions for 408 yards.
The 49ers extended wide receiver Jeremy Kerley, and have signed Pierre Garcon, Marquise Goodwin, Aldrick Robinson, and DeAndre Carter. They join a depth chart that includes Bruce Ellington, Eric Rogers, Aaron Burbridge, DeAndre Smelter, Rashad Ross, and Chris Harper. There is some talent in there, but a lot of question marks. I’m particularly intrigued by what Rogers might be able to do once his ACL is fully rehabbed, but even he has enough question marks given his experience is almost entirely in the CFL.
Will we see any of the returning group (excluding Kerley) emerge this year? It’s safe to say Garcon, Kerley, Goodwin, and Robinson will make the roster. Who will get the final one or two spots on the wide receiver depth chart?
