The Cleveland Browns currently hold the No. 1 pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, and there is still a chance they surprise all of us. Amidst virtually every mock draft projecting Texas A&M pass rusher Myles Garrett to the Browns, beat writer May Kay Cabot is reporting the team is “strongly considering” North Carolina quarterback Mitch Trubisky with the No. 1 overall pick.
The Browns badly need an answer at quarterback, and Trubisky is from nearby Mentor, Ohio. A quarterback at No. 1 is not a surprise in many years, but there have been a lot of question marks about the position in this year’s draft. Trubisky put together a strong 2016 season, but it is also the only starting season he has under his belt. Inexperience brings significant question marks.
Trubisky measured in at just over 6’2, which Browns head coach Hue Jackson said was a magic number for him. The Browns currently have quarterbacks Robert Griffin III, Cody Kessler, and Kevin Hogan on the roster. The Browns could go into the season with that, but Jackson said that is not how they hope it shakes out.
We can’t really believe much of anything between now and April until we see actual moves happen. The Browns could decide Trubisky is the answer, but they could also try and convince someone to climb up to the No. 1 pick for a king’s ransom. My guess is when late April arrives they draft Myles Garrett, but maybe the 49ers will get lucky and the Browns will take a quarterback.
