Quinton Patton appears to be signing with New York Jets

New, comments

Quinton Patton’s Instagram account suggests he is headed to the Jets.

Fooch’s note: The Jets have made it official.

Former San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Quinton Patton appears to have found a new home. Patton visited with the New York Jets over the weekend, and it sounds like he has signed with the team. Patton has posted good bye messages on Instagram to his former 49ers teammates, and Chris Biderman pointed out that Patton was in a live video on Monday wearing a Jets shirt.

Patton struggled to get going his first two seasons with the 49ers. He played in ten games, and had six catches for 78 yards. In his third and fourth seasons, he started to move in the right direction. He played in the full season in 2015, catching 30 passes for 394 yards and a touchdown. In 2016, he played 14 games, catching 37 passes for 408 yards. It was a step forward, but after a slow start, he did not show nearly enough to convince the 49ers to bring him back.

The 49ers are through the bulk of their free agency additions, and currently have 11 receivers under contract. The group includes Pierre Garcon, Jeremy Kerley, Marquise Goodwin, Aldrick Robinson, Eric Rogers, Bruce Ellington, Aaron Burbridge, DeAndre Carter, Chris Harper, Rashad Ross, and DeAndre Smelter.

Garcon, Kerley, Goodwin, and Robinson all seem like locks to make the roster. The Falcons carried seven receivers at one point last year, so there are between one and three possible openings last year. My early prediction would be Rogers, Ellington and Burbridge are the leading candidates for a roster spot. But it will be interesting to see what the depth chart looks like come August preseason action.
