The 49ers family was given terrible news on Sunday night when 49er legend Dwight Clark broke the news that he has been diagnosed with ALS. Dwight, who was on the receiving end of one of the greatest plays in NFL history and sparked the start of a dynasty, delivered the news via Twitter. He has a big battle ahead of him, but he has the full support of the 49ers family in this upcoming battle.
ALS, which was the force behind the Ice Bucket Challenge a few years back, has affected a NFL franchise before. The New Orleans Saints had their former player, Steve Gleason, affected by the disease. He was part of one of the Saints’ most important plays after Hurricane Katrina ravaged the city. ALS robbed Steve of his motor skills. His battle was the topic of a documentary that gave a behind the scenes look at what Steve has been going through. Steve sent an inspirational message and his support to Dwight through social media.
Former owner Eddie DeBartolo Jr, current CEO Jed York, and former teammates have given their support for the beloved 49er in his time of need. Dwight suggested that his playing days could have been a cause of his ALS diagnosis. He had battles in his football playing days and he is now preparing for his biggest battle yet. Hopefully, Dwight is able to fight and win this personal battle.
