The first two or three waves of NFL free agency are a wrap, and now we are getting into more of the lesser known players getting visits and deals. We’ll see something with some of the notable veteran names in the coming weeks and months, but for now, lesser names are getting an opportunity to do some visiting.
One of those players is former 49ers guard Andrew Tiller. Matt Barrows is reporting Tiller is visiting with the Kansas City Chiefs on Tuesday. Tiller spent the past three seasons with the 49ers, first signing to the practice squad in October 2014. He was promoted to the active roster for one game that season. After a strong 2015 training camp and preseason, he opened the season on the practice squad, but was promoted to the active roster after Week 4. He started seven games and appeared in five more that season. In 2016, he started seven games, and appeared in eight more.
Tiller has been a capable option for the 49ers, particularly given that he joined the team after bouncing around with few opportunities. The 49ers still need offensive line depth, but the addition of Jeremy Zuttah cuts down on the interior line need. The loser of the competition between Zuttah and Daniel Kilgore would likely either move to left guard, or serve as the utility guy at center and the two guard positions. If it is the former, Zane Beadles is then either cut, or turns into a utility guy across the entire line.
The 49ers offensive line depth chart currently includes:
OT: Joe Staley, Trenton Brown, Norman Price, John Theus
OG: Zane Beadles, Joshua Garnett
C: Jeremy Zuttah, Daniel Kilgore, Alex Balducci
The 49ers are going to add several more offensive linemen to this group to fill out the depth chart for OTAs and then training camp. I could see least six more linemen joining the group. Maybe two or three guards, two or three tackles, and potentially another center.
We don’t know exactly what they think about the returning offensive linemen, so we’re left guessing in some regards. However, from the above group, I suspect we’d likely see Staley, Brown, Beadles, Garnett, Zuttah, and Kilgore on the roster. If Beadles is around, they likely carry one more tackle and one more guard, considering Beadles can play several positions. They would potentially have a ninth offensive lineman, but again, it would depend on the versatility of the rest of the group.
