No surprise on this news. North Carolina quarterback Mitchell Trubisky met with the media on Tuesday following his Pro Day workout, and told them he has private workouts set up with the San Francisco 49ers, Cleveland Browns, New York Jets, and Kansas City Chiefs, “among others,” according to Andrew Carter.
The 49ers were at his Pro Day, but head coach Kyle Shanahan was not part of the group. The Pro Day contingent included GM John Lynch, senior personnel executive Martin Mayhew, VP of Player Personnel Adam Peters, and QB coach Rich Scangarello.
Last week, John Lynch told KNBR that the team was doing a QB tour this week, and they had also met with all the quarterbacks they were interested in during the Combine. That would suggest Kyle Shanahan met with Trubisky, among others during the Combine.
There is always more to learn, but a private workout seems like a more valuable opportunity than a Pro Day workout. I look at it like a cover letter. A great cover letter or Pro Day performance likely won’t be enough to get you the job, but a bad cover letter or Pro Day performance can certainly kill your chances.
The 49ers have a workout planned with Clemson’s DeShaun Watson, and will also head to Notre Dame for DeShone Kizer’s Pro Day workout. My guess is they will also have a private workout with Kizer.
