How about a Brett Favre comparison for Patrick Mahomes?

The 49ers have some options at quarterback in the upcoming draft. How about a guy who now has a Brett Favre comparison under his belt?

The Texas Tech Pro Day will take place on March 31, and that should be a busy day for NFL teams. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes has rocketed up media position rankings, and there are thoughts he could go as early as the late first round.

Once Mahomes’ Pro Day is complete, he will make the rounds with private workouts and official visits. Odds are pretty good the San Francisco 49ers will be among those who spend extra time with the Texas Tech QB, and I stumbled across a comparison that is likely to get more fans excited.

Back in late February, SiriusXM radio host Pat Kirwan tweeted out a Mahomes comparison he heard. A “well respected QB coach” thought Mahomes had the best arm talent he has seen since Brett Favre. He cited that the QB was raw and not ready yet, but had a lot of arm talent.

The 49ers QB coach, Rich Scangarello, does not have a lot of QB coach experience, particularly in the NFL. His only NFL QB coach experience prior to this job was with the Oakland Raiders, but he was primarily an offensive quality control coach. This is simply to say, I’m pretty sure it was not Scangarello who compared Mahomes to Favre.

Mahomes has been projected in the late first round by some media, but it seems like we could see him going anywhere from the middle of the first round to sometime in the second round. DeShaun Watson and Mitchell Trubisky seem as close to locks as we’ll get for first round picks. After that, it’s anybody’s guess. Mahomes, DeShone Kizer, and Davis Webb have all been mentioned as potentially coming off the board next. Nathan Peterman and Brad Kaaya will likely be the next batch after that, but where exactly is tough to say.
