The San Francisco 49ers were active the past month in adding some high level talent to their front office, and it sounds like they are not done. Jason La Canfora is reporting the 49ers are looking to add some more personnel talent, and former Cleveland Browns and Washington executive Morocco Brown might be under consideration.
La Canfora wrote about this in an article that focused on Washington’s dysfunction and plans moving forward. Washington is looking to add a general manager, and they seem to want someone with serious experience. His sources indicate Washington is looking to offer $1.5 million per year, which might not be enough to lure in a notable name.
Whether they go with a big name or not, it will be hard to hire someone given the problems associated with having Dan Snyder and Bruce Allen in charge. It might not really be a full-on GM job, and even if it was, we saw what happened with Scot McCloughan.
Morocco Brown most recently worked for the Browns during the 2014 and 2015 seasons as Vice President of Player Personnel. Prior to that, he was director of pro personnel in Washington from 2008 to 2014, and assistant director of pro personnel in Chicago from 2001 to 2007. Brown’s time in Washington and Cleveland overlapped with Kyle Shanahan, and reportedly the two have a strong relationship. I spoke with Ken Meringolo from Hogs Haven. A non-GM is not always easy to track, but Ken had this to say.
He was our "director of pro personnel" and I use quotes on purpose because he was basically a GM without the title. The best way to describe his career arc with the Skins is that he interviewed--repeatedly--for jobs outside the organization before being hired by the Browns in 2013/14 I think. He was respected by beat guys and inside-the-building guys, which I believe is a big reason why he would join back up with Kyle.
We just do a terrible job of growing our front office from within. Bruce Allen and Dan Snyder are in charge so titles here mean zilch.
Hell, we just lost another good one that I now you are familiar with (Scot "McLovin" McCloughan), and even though he had some hair on him, I don't think his drinking cost him this job. I think Bruce and Dan just couldn't handle someone else being smarter than them and more loved than them.
