The San Francisco 49ers roster is not entirely devoid of talent, but as they head into the 2017 NFL Draft, there is a significant need for some young additions. The team invested in a lot of veterans in free agency, but it included quite a few veterans that likely won’t be around for a long time, or are simply filling some short-term holes.
Earlier this week, NFL.com posted their All-Under-25 team, and the 49ers managed to land a player on it. Punter Bradley Pinion got some love, although they did admit DeForest Buckner got consideration. Here’s what they said:
Of course the one 49er to make the All-Under-25 team is a punter, though defensive end DeForest Buckner received serious consideration. Pinion darn near punted his leg off with 100 boots, averaging 44 yards per kick. Obviously, he was leaned on more than any punter in the game and did a heckuva job forcing fair catches instead of returns.
The team’s defensive tackles included Stephon Tuitt and Leonard Williams, while their defensive ends were Joey Bosa and Danielle Hunter. They included Jadeveon Clowney as a hybrid OLB/DE. Buckner had a strong rookie season, but it’s hard to argue him over any of those five players.
The 49ers have 21 players that will be under the age of 25 when the 2017 season starts. Here’s the full list, starting at 24 and going backwards. For those under 24, I did not check their age when the season kicks off, except for Rashard Robinson since he is the youngest. He will turn 22 shortly before training camp starts.
We can’t fully assess who will be starting when the season begins, but for the time being, it includes five or six starters (Lynch, Armstead, Brown, Buckner, Garnett, Robinson), a special teams player in Bradley Pinion, and then some potential rotational guys like Blair, Harold, and Redmond.
Ronald Blair - 24
Prince Charles Iworah
Arik Armstead - 23
Wynton McManis - 22
Rashard Robinson - 21
