49ers to host OLB/DE Johnathan Calvin for official visit

The 49ers are going to meet with at least one pass rusher amongst their 30 official visits.

The San Francisco 49ers will conduct a total 30 official host visits with NFL Draft prospects, and it will include a pass rush possibility. Tony Pauline is reporting the 49ers will host Mississippi State edge rusher Johnathan Calvin for an official visit. He will also meet with the soon-to-be Las Vegas Raiders.

Calvin measured in at his Pro Day at 6’2, 275 pounds after spending two years at Mississippi State. He started his career at junior college and then transferred in. As a junior, he had 5.5 sacks, and as a senior he took a step forward with 12.0 sacks.

Pauline had this to say about the Pro Day performance.

We’ve mentioned Jonathan Calvin several times since January and the defensive end/outside linebacker had a great pro day. Measuring 6027/275 pounds, Calvin timed as fast as 4.72s in the forty, touched 35.5 inches in the vertical jump and reached 9-foot-4 in the broad jump.

The 49ers need help in the pass rush, and will be looking to add someone to compete at the Leo end role. Ahmad Brooks and Aaron Lynch could both end up competing for that role, but given Brooks’ age and Lynch’s weight issues, a fresh option makes sense.

Late last year, our friends at Bleeding Green Nation had this to say about Calvin heading into his bowl game:

Two years in a row, the Bulldogs put a stud defensive linemen into the NFL draft with eh likes of Preston Smith and then Chris Jones last year. This year, Calvin has the best potential on the Bulldogs defense to become an NFL impact player. At 6-3, 275 pounds, Calvin has a stout build. He does a great job anchoring against the run and his strength and motor make him hard to handle for blockers. He is a well rounded defender who is scheme diverse, so keep an eye out for him in the mid rounds.
