Roger Goodell: Clubs haven’t told him why they’re choosing not to sign Colin Kaepernick

Not exactly a shocking comment from Roger Goodell.

The NFL commissioner held his annual press conference at the owners’ meetings, and it is not surprising that he got a question about Colin Kaepernick. There have been comments about whether or not Kaepernick is being black-balled by teams around the league. Goodell offered up the kind of response one would expect.

“I haven’t heard that from our clubs in any way that that’s an issue,” Goodell said. “My experience in 35 years is that our clubs make independent evaluations of players. They work hard to try to improve their teams. But if they think a player can help improve their team, they’re going to do that.”

Obviously Goodell would not say, “Well, obviously he’s being blackballed. Duh!” But I also think when we’re talking about language, as John Harbaugh mentioned during his media session, there’s nuance.

Black-balling suggests a concerted effort by the entire league, with collusion happening. I don’t think there has been a situation where the owners all decided in a room that nobody was going to sign Kaepernick. And NFL executive VP of football operations, Troy Vincent, said the owners did not discuss setting any sort of standard protocol for players during the Anthem.

In spite of all that, I see there being a mix of reasons for Kaepernick remaining a free agent. If he was playing like Tom Brady, he would be signed. But at the same time, he is a better quarterback than some of the players out there. One issue is the timing and the type of role. We’ve heard he wants a chance to compete for a starting role, and high end backup or low end starting money. But Pro Football Talk has heard that report is not true.

Whatever the case, everybody has some kind of opinion. With that in mind, I thought I would post a poll. From these options, what do you think describes why Colin Kaepernick has not been signed by a team yet?
