The NFL Combine is bringing with it all sorts of crazy trade rumors. Teams cannot formally make trades until the new league year starts next Thursday, but negotiations are fast and furious right now.
The most notable trade chatter involves New Orleans Saints wide receiver Brandin Cooks. Reports suggest he wants out, and the Saints are speaking with the Philadelphia Eagles and Tennessee Titans about a potential deal. The Eagles are reportedly the front-runner, and the Titans lack of a second round pick might cost them.
The 49ers could use wide receiver help, and free agency and the draft are the two most likely options for them. They have been connected to Chicago Bears wide receiver Alshon Jeffery. ESPN’s Josina Anderson reported the 49ers, Bears, Titans, and Eagles were all interested in the receiver, and NFL Network’s Mike Garapolo reported the 49ers were his very early front-runner.
If the Eagles or Titans land Cooks, any deal will likely include a sizable contract extension. If that is the case, it would seemingly remove one of them from the Jeffery sweepstakes. I don’t think that drastically lowers what it might cost to land, but it would remove a significant piece of competition for the free agent.
I am not overly sold on Jeffery given his injury history, but if the 49ers are going to make a play for him, Brandin Cooks could make it a little bit easier.
