The free agent wide receiver market could be a cash bonanza this year, and it sounds like the San Francisco 49ers will be kicking the tires on a lot of options. Matt Barrows is reporting the team has interest in Los Angeles Rams free agent Kenny Britt. This follows an ESPN report that the Philadelphia Eagles are also interested in Britt.
The 49ers have a big need at wide receiver. They have Torrey Smith and Jeremy Kerley as two proven options under contract, and then a bunch of lottery tickets. Britt is coming off a season in which he had 68 receptions for 1,002 yards. It was his first season with over 50 receptions and over 800 yards. Britt was selected by the Tennessee Titans in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft. He showed some signs early in his career, but never really emerged as a consistent viable threat.
This follows a report that the 49ers are interested in free agent Terrelle Pryor, and the connections to Alshon Jeffery. The Eagles and Titans have also been connected to Pryor, and also trade rumors surrounding Brandin Cooks. It is safe to say that for most of the rest of the week, we are going to hear a lot of rumors connecting these three teams and the Browns to free agent wide receivers.
The 49ers have plenty of cap space to fill a variety of needs. I think the market is such that any team is going to overpay for the bigger names. If I’m the 49ers, my preference remains Pierre Garcon, but I could be down with rolling the dice on Terrelle Pryor. I’d take either over Jeffery and Britt at this point.
