NFL free agency rumors 2017: 49ers expected to compete for A.J. Bouye

The 49ers are connected to another big name free agent. No surprise.

The San Francisco 49ers have a lot of roster questions and a lot of cap space, so it is no surprise they are being connected to numerous free agents. Agents know how to play the game, and they know the 49ers will be a valuable tool for leveraging a quality contract.

And so, we present the latest report. Houston Texans beat writer Aaron Wilson is reporting the 49ers will be among the six or so teams competing for the services of cornerback A.J. Bouye.

Bouye entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent, but has emerged as a strong option at cornerback. If he can build on his recent production, he would be a strong upgrade to the depth chart. The question is if the price is worth it. The 49ers are not loaded at cornerback, by any stretch, but they have some talented options. If Jimmie Ward moves to free safety, they would likely start Tramaine Brock and Rashard Robinson. Brock has some issues, but is a fairly steady veteran who has gotten work against some of the better receivers in the league. Robinson dealt with injuries, but had a solid rookie season to build on.

This year’s draft class of cornerbacks is viewed by many as one of the deepest in a long time. I can see wanting to find a clear No. 1 cornerback option, but if you are building for the long haul, there could be value in not investing significant cap space, and instead finding one or two options later next month in the draft.

I guess it all comes down to what exactly you make of the 49ers current cornerback depth chart.
