NFL free agency rumors: 49ers, Jets showing strong interest in Brian Hoyer

I’m down with signing Brian Hoyer to a short deal.

The San Francisco 49ers need quarterbacks, and the list of potential free agent targets is growing. Ian Rapoport is reporting the 49ers and New York Jets are showing strong interest in Cleveland Browns quarterback Brian Hoyer.

Hoyer was on the Jets radar last year, but more importantly for 49ers fans, he played for Kyle Shanahan in Cleveland in 2014. He played in 14 games for the Browns that season, passing for 3,326 yards, with 12 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. This season he appeared in six games for the Chicago Bears. He completed 67 percent of his passes for 1,445 yards, with six touchdowns and no interceptions.

There has been plenty of chatter about Kirk Cousins, but if that kind of deal does not happen, Hoyer might be an ideal bridge quarterback for Shanahan. He had great success in 2014 on a crappy Browns team. There are better quarterbacks out there, but this year’s free agency market is pretty bad. I’d rather have Hoyer than Mike Glennon considering the likely difference in price tag. And honestly, I’d be fine with Hoyer over Glennon on a similar APY as I think Hoyer would likely be a shorter-term deal.

Whether or not the 49ers can land a long-term option in the 2017 NFL Draft, Hoyer would buy them some time to build this offense from the ground up. And signing Hoyer does not preclude numerous additions at the quarterback position.
