The San Francisco 49ers did not have a fullback in 2016, but the hiring of Kyle Shanahan likely means the position will return to favor. USA Today NFL reporter Tom Pelissero is reporting the 49ers are among the teams interested in free agent fullback Kyle Juszczyk. Earlier on Wednesday, Adam Schefter reported the Buffalo Bills are the favorite to land Juszczyk.
Shanahan’s offense can adjust to the personnel, but the fullback role was important in the Atlanta Falcons offense. Under Shanahan’s direction, Patrick DiMarco emerged as a Pro Bowl alternate in Atlanta. Running backs Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman got the press, but DiMarco was a big contributor as a blocker and receiver.
Juszczyk and DiMarco are viewed as the top two fullbacks on the market, but there are a variety of options the 49ers could consider. Jerome Felton, Zach Line, and Marcel Reece are some other options the 49ers could consider for the role.
