The University of Alabama hosted their Pro Day, and most everybody in the NFL was on hand to check out their top prospects. The two most notable are linebacker Reuben Foster and defensive tackle Jonathan Allen, both of whom have been projected inside the top five draft picks at one point or another.
Foster met with teams to discuss his dismissal from the NFL Combine following a heated argument with a hospital worker. There is no word on what teams are taking away from this, but it will be something to watch on draft day to see if there is a slide.
Allen is the other big name, and he spent time in one-on-one meetings with several teams, including the San Francisco 49ers, according to Tony Pauline. The biggest question surrounding his surgically repaired shoulders. An Alabama doctor said he would be fine, but there are some concerns about how he will hold up to wear and tear.
It is no surprise the 49ers would meet with Allen. Holding the No. 2 pick, the 49ers will have their choice of almost anybody on their draft board. Texas A&M pass rusher Myles Garrett is likely going to be off the board, but otherwise, the 49ers have a lot of choices.
The 49ers have invested in Earl Mitchell, and are reportedly talking to a couple other defensive tackles in free agency. However, a cornerstone type of player like Allen is not someone you pass on with ease. I can’t say with any certainty which way the 49ers will go at No. 2. Drafting an offensive lineman, tight end, fullback, kicker, or punter are about the only moves that would leave me slack-jawed. Other than that, I don’t think any position would surprise me.
