Texans trade Brock Osweiler to Cleveland Browns

The NFL set to play hot potato with Brock Osweiler’s contract.

This is stunning news! The Houston Texans have found someone to take Brock Osweiler! Adam Schefter is reporting the Texans are going to trade Osweiler and a second round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft to the Cleveland Browns to take his salary off Houston’s books. This opens the door for Houston to make a big push for Tony Romo. The deal also involves Cleveland sending a 2017 fourth round pick and Houston sending a 2017 sixth round pick.

Schefter is reporting the Browns are not committed to keeping Osweiler, and are “likely to try to trade him.” The Browns have a ton of cap space, so the contract is no matter if they cannot get a deal done. But my guess is they’ll deal him for just about anything knowing they now have Houston’s second round pick in hand. Either way, the Browns have basically traded cap space for a quality draft pick.

As far as I can tell, this changes nothing about Cleveland’s need for a quarterback, or whatever plans they might have for the rest of free agency and the 2017 NFL Draft. As Schefter said, this is a rare salary dump trade like what we see in the NBA with huge players on expiring deals getting moved. We might see Brock Osweiler’s contract turn into a proverbial hot potato the rest of this week!
