John Lynch discusses Brian Hoyer signing, other QB plans

Yes, the 49ers will in fact be adding more quarterbacks.

The San Francisco 49ers signed their first quarterback on Thursday, inking Brian Hoyer to a two-year contract. The team entered the day without a quarterback on the roster, so it was certainly a plus to get the first one signed.

There are plenty of questions about Hoyer and what he brings to the table, but clearly he will not be the last quarterback addition. General manager John Lynch made an appearance on NFL Network after the team announced the signings, and he said the team was up front with Hoyer, and will always be looking for ways to “be the best that we can be” at the position.

Here is a rundown of his comments, with video available here.

On QB position:

Well, we’re really excited about Brian Hoyer; him being a part of the 49ers. Brian’s been with Kyle, Kyle obviously knows what he’s getting with Brian Hoyer. I’ve been an admirer from afar, and he’s got an opportunity to come and be our guy. That was really important to Brian, and we’re really thrilled. We think he’s perfect for what we wanted, and we’re excited.

On Hoyer being a bridge QB:

I think we were very transparent with Brian in terms of what we’re doing. And right now, he’s our guy, but we’re always gonna explore, particularly at that position to be the best that we can be. That’s what we did with Brian. We’ve got one on our roster, as of 1 o’clock today out here, we had zero on our roster. So, we feel a lot better there. But we’ve got some work to do.

On where they’ll find more quarterbacks:

Well, free agency’s not over, and obviously the draft’s out there. We’ll look at those options, and we’ll look at those options really hard. That process has begun, it continues, we look forward to it.

On Kirk Cousins rumors:

You know, I’m not at liberty to talk about guys under contract. He is one of those. But, you know, as I’ve said, we’re going to look at every option to try to be the best that we can be. Kyle and I set out here with an organization that’s coming off a couple bad years. But we’re here to build championships, and so to do that, we know how critical that position is. That’s why we feel so strongly about Brian right now, and as I said, we’re gonna continue to look and to delve into any and every option.
