49ers to work out UTEP running back Aaron Jones

New, comments

The 49ers need help at running back, so expect a lot of conversations.

The San Francisco 49ers will be conducting private workouts with a variety of players, and we appear to have word on one of them. University of Texas-El Paso running back Aaron Jones was in attendance at the school’s Pro Day on Thursday, and he said he has private workouts scheduled with the 49ers and the New Orleans Saints.

Jones is coming off a huge 2016 season. He rushed for 1,773 yards and 17 touchdowns. His rushing total was fourth in FCS, and his touchdown total was tied for 11th. He declared for the draft a year early, in spite of the draft advisory board telling him he was best suited returning to school. The board offers grades of either first round, second round, or return to school. He got the last one, but decided it was worth the risk. Considering he was coming off such a strong season, I’m guessing he reasoned his draft stock was not going to get any higher.

The 49ers currently have Carlos Hyde, Mike Davis, and Raheem Mostert at the running back position. They added fullback Kyle Juszczyk, but it is safe to say they’ll add at least one or two more running backs to compete for an opportunity.

Nine NFL scouts were on hand for the UTEP Pro Day, but I am not seeing word on the 49ers being there. In the meantime, here is some video of Jones working out for the scouts.
