As I was collecting links tonight I came across a nice nugget of news stating that Washington quarterback Kirk Cousins has finally been offered a contract. No, before you even go there—this isn’t an April fools joke, though that entire situation in Washington is an absolute joke.
So, he has a contract on the table. Now it’s time to see just what has been true about this drama and what hasn’t. Just because he has a contract doesn’t mean he’ll sign it. The contract is apparently in the tune of five years, but if you look at the report, it seems like it’s mostly so Washington acting general manager Bruce Allen doesn’t get canned. Even Washington’s fans know more about football than that front office and its speculated a loss of Cousins that follows the loss of Scott McCloughan would mean Allen would be next to hit unemployment.
So why am I bringing this up? The 49ers have officially pre-empted us to do “Cousins Watch” round-the-clock. It can be an educated guess that Brian Hoyer is keeping the seat warm for Cousins come next season when he’s available. The 49ers were smart and didn’t blow all that money they had in cap room, so maybe it’s to lure Cousins over in a year.
Or maybe the entire thing is blown out of proportion and Santa Clara will never be a destination. If reports today are any indication, perhaps Patrick Mahomes is the guy?
God, I hope not.
