Kyle Shanahan, 49ers worked out Mitchell Trubisky last week

Kyle Shanahan discussed some aspects of the process he is going through in his QB evaluation for the 2017 NFL Draft.

Fooch’s note: Adam Schefter reporting QB coach Rich Scangarello was there, too.

The San Francisco 49ers are doing plenty of due diligence when it comes to quarterbacks. Monday morning, Bleacher Report’s Matt Miller reported the 49ers worked out North Carolina QB Mitchell Trubisky last week, with head coach Kyle Shanahan running the workout. Shanahan later confirmed during his press conference that he had met with Trubisky.

This news comes as the 49ers welcome Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson to the team’s facility for an official visit. I don’t believe there is word yet that the 49ers are going to bring in Trubisky for an official visit. It is worth noting he already met with the team at the NFL Combine, and they were on hand for the North Carolina Pro Day.

Kyle Shanahan discussed the QB assessment process on Monday. He did not confirm the number of quarterbacks the team would meet with, but he also said that the evaluation process for each quarterback is different.

“I’m not sure of that exact number. I met with a number of them in Indy. I’ve met with a number of them over the past few weeks, a number of them with phone calls. You do each guy differently. I don’t take the same system with each person. There’s some guys you can watch on tape and you just talk to them on the phone and you feel you’ve got a great feel for them or you watch them on tape and you remember the time you spent with them at Indy and you feel good about it. There’s some guys you feel that you’ve got to meet, you’ve got to see something. Just maybe one little thing that you’re looking for. So, there’s lots of different things that go into each person. It could change every year for me. Sometimes I don’t feel like I need to see anybody. I can see what I would want on tape or I can see what I don’t want on tape and you’re good to go. But, every guy’s different.”

The 49ers have had some kind of meeting with Trubisky, Watson, Patrick Mahomes, and DeShone Kizer. We have not heard connections to any other quarterback at this point. The rest of the class is not the most awe-inspiring of options, but one would think they have or are being evaluated in some form or fashion. Could that mean more of a surprise when the draft arrives?
