49ers hosted S Jamal Adams for official visit

Do the 49ers go safety early, or does Jimmie Ward potentially get the best chance at the free safety role?

The San Francisco 49ers have until Wednesday, April 19, to complete their 30 official pre-draft visits, and we can add another to the list. NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport tweeted that the 49ers hosted LSU safety Jamal Adams sometime “recently.”

Adams has been mentioned as an option at the No. 2 pick, in competition with Malik Hooker to be the first safety off the board. The 49ers are looking at Jimmie Ward at free safety, but both Hooker and Adams could be in the mix. It is a deep draft across the secondary, so the 49ers could also decide to wait for depth.

However, they could do a lot worse than Jamal Adams at No. 2. I had been operating under the notion that Hooker could fill the Earl Thomas role, while Adams might be better suited in the Kam Chancellor role closer to the box. However, I’ve started to see some suggestions otherwise. He would be a good in-the-box safety, but he’s done work in center-field, and has the wheels to cover wide range in the deeper portion of the field.

I’m still not entirely sure what to think the 49ers have in mind for the free safety position come draft time. Hooker and Adams could both be great picks, but what is it possible the 49ers could decide in the next ten days that Jimmie Ward could be the answer? Or do they still consider a high pick on a safety even if Ward is still in the mix for free safety work?
