Golden Nuggets: 1st Round Begins Tomorrow

One more day until the NFL draft’s 1st round begins. The months of rumors and mock drafts will come to an end and we will find out how close we really were to correctly picking the players. We will learn how John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan plan on rebuilding the 49ers from its current state. The 49ers have kept their plans for their 1st round pick under wraps.

The 49ers have been rumored to select quite a few players for the #2 pick. Solomon Thomas, Leonard Fournette, Mitch Trubisky, Malik Hooker, and Jamal Adams are a few to have earned the pick in mock drafts. Quarterback at #2 makes little sense if Kyle is interested in reuniting with Kirk Cousins next offseason. A quarterback will be drafted later in the draft to help provide competition to Brian Hoyer and Matt Barkley.

Solomon Thomas has been mocked as the #2 pick the most, but I think the team goes with another position group after the 49ers drafted defensive linemen the last 2 drafts in the 1st round. The idea of drafting a safety is intriguing because of the possibility of Jimmie Ward staying at corner due to the release of Tramaine Brock. Both Malik Hooker and Jamal Adams would be good picks. But the outcome the 49ers really want is to trade back in the draft. They need more picks. With no surefire player at #2, the ability to get more picks would be welcome by Lynch and Shanahan.
