2017 NFL draft: Tom Rathman, Justin Smith to announce 49ers draft picks

Two 49ers legends will be announcing the team’s second and third round picks.

In recent years, the NFL has had a variety of special presenters who announce draft picks throughout the three days of the NFL draft. We see military veterans, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital patients, Make-A-Wish kids, and of course former NFL players providing picks through the seven rounds.

The NFL announced the guest presenters this year, including a full list of former players. Each team will have a former player presenting in the second and third round. For the San Francisco 49ers, fullback Tom Rathman and defensive tackle Justin Smith will make those announcements, respectively. The 49ers hold the second pick of each round (Nos. 34 and 66).

The 49ers announced on Tuesday that Rathman will be inducted into the franchise’s Edward DeBartolo, Sr. Hall of Fame. He will meet with the media on Wednesday, and the induction ceremony and halftime ceremony will take place this fall.

Smith retired following the 2014 season, and has quietly just done his thing back in Missouri. He makes the occasional appearance at 49ers games, and continues to have some great interviews on KNBR, but otherwise he seems pretty chill with life in retirement. Last year, he said he would never say never with regard to potentially becoming a coach eight or ten years down the road, but he likes the farm life right now.
