The moment I realized the 49ers picked Robert Selah to be their defensive coordinator on February 13th I immediately looked at the draft prospects to see if any single high safeties were available. I did not have any trouble finding Malik Hooker’s name amongst the top ten players in the draft. The more I read about him and the more I watched him, the more I liked him. It is probably a lazy pick on my part but he is my favorite player if we draft at the #2 spot.
But, what if we do not draft Hooker at number two? What if the John and Kyle show decide to go another direction with the number two pick? What then? Do we go with Budda Baker or another free safety in the draft? Do we go with Ward? Maybe we convert a cornerback that is already on the team? Do we depend on Ward making the transition or do we find some competition? What if Ward gets hurt? Do we draft someone to compete with him and let the loser be the backup?
Notes:
I loved the article on Shanahan’s interest in Garcon and if I wasn’t already a fan of Forrest Lamp before, I am now after seeing his picture in Zoltan Buday’s article. Believe it or not, one of the articles below even has a section about the 49ers chances of signing Jay Cutler.
