49ers release CB Tramaine Brock

The 49ers did not wait long to send a message.

The San Francisco 49ers have announced the release of cornerback Tramaine Brock. The move comes not long after he was arrested on suspicion of felony domestic violence. The release of Brock leaves the 49ers with $750,000 in dead money, and clears $3,550,000 in cap space. He was entering the final year of his contract with the team.

The 49ers cornerback depth chart now includes Jimmie Ward, Rashard Robinson, K’Waun Williams, Keith Reaser, Will Redmond, Dontae Johnson, JaCorey Shepherd, and Prince Charles Iworah. There has been talk of moving Ward to free safety, although both John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan said they need to see how his skills convert on the field.

Whether or not the team moves Ward to free safety, cornerback is a need. This is viewed as one of the deepest cornerback classes in recent memory. The 49ers could spend the No. 2 pick on Marshon Lattimore, but they could also find significant options at No. 34 or No. 66.
