Blaine Gabbert signs one-year deal with Arizona Cardinals

He is the only one of the 49ers 2017 quarterbacks to land a job thus far.

The San Francisco 49ers will get to see Blaine Gabbert twice next season. The quarterback has signed a one-year deal with the Arizona Cardinals, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. So, I suppose the 49ers will see him twice on the sideline and that is assuming he makes the team later this summer.

Gabbert will compete with Drew Stanton to serve as Carson Palmer’s backup. That is a fairly notable role considering Palmer’s injury history and age. Palmer played 15 games last season and 16 the season before, but is 37 heading into the 2017 season. It’s probably a decent bet that someone other than Palmer makes at least one start for the Cardinals this fall.

I suppose I am not all that surprised that Gabbert has a job before Colin Kaepernick. I was not super confident Gabbert would land a job heading into training camp, but given some of the bad quarterbacks that have been signed this offseason, or were already on rosters, I suppose it makes sense Gabbert would land a job. Whether he’s on the roster Week 1 remains to be seen, but it says something that he was able to secure a job.
