Aaron Lynch weighing in 280s, ‘going in the right direction’

Aaron Lynch’s weight remains a storyline, but Kyle Shanahan feels good about his direction.

One of the many questions that is becoming a regular query in the San Francisco 49ers offseason is what Aaron Lynch is weighing. He has been one of their more productive pass rushers when healthy and on the field, but weight fluctuation has always been an issue for him.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke to the media after practice on Tuesday, and he had positive words about Lynch. Shanahan said the new coaching staff has challenged Lynch this offseason and, “[t]here’s no doubt that Aaron is going in the right direction for us.”

After practice, Lynch said he is weighing in the 280s right now, and would like to get down into the 260s. He said he is “working my ass off,” per Cam Inman, and in better shape than he was a year ago, per Matt Maiocco.

Training camp gets going in just over two months, and Lynch will likely be looking at that as a critical time to be where he needs to be from a weight perspective. Pedigree doesn’t mean anything under a new coaching staff. Lynch is talented, but has struggled with consistency and staying on the field. Entering the final season of his rookie deal, the next three months are critical to his future.
