Brian Hoyer, Matt Barkley, and C.J. Beathard will battle for the starting quarterback job on the 49ers. But one of those 3 has a bigger advantage over the other 2. Brian Hoyer is on this 2nd stint as a QB under Kyle Shanahan and has the best understanding of the offense Kyle wants to run. He was the QB on the Browns in 2014 when Kyle was the offensive coordinator.
Hoyer isn’t the best of quarterbacks, but he can help the 49ers in this transition phase until Kyle finds his franchise quarterback. Hoyer has familiarity with the play calls and knows where his offense should be lined up. He will also help rookie C.J. Beathard with learning the playbook and the language. C.J. could be the quarterback of the 49ers future, but he will need Hoyer to help him learn the head coach’s offense. C.J. will probably not play this season, but he will benefit from the year off and will be ready next season.
