Good morning! The San Francisco 49ers rookie class will officially meet in Santa Clara on Thursday. The team formally opens their rookie minicamp, which will run through the weekend. Players will get their first jersey numbers as they take the field for the first time. I say “first jersey numbers” because many numbers will change after final roster cuts clear out some numbers.
There is not a whole lot to take from rookie minicamp. The most notable is which players are in the best and worst shape. It doesn’t happen every year, but sometimes we’ll hear reports of certain players not being in nearly good enough shape. It has been a long four months for these players preparing for the draft, but that condition is not always ideal football condition. Additionally, once private workouts end, some players are busy with social engagements leading up to the draft. It’s all part of the process, but it’s something to keep on our radar.
Meanwhile, the 49ers veterans are wrapping up the first set of Phase 2 workouts. Those began May 1. The next set is May 8-11, and the final set is May 16-18. They will move on to OTAs after that.
