49ers release RB Mike Davis

The 49ers needed to make one more move to clear space for their new class of UDFAs.

Fooch’s update: The 49ers made the move official.

The San Francisco 49ers have released running back Mike Davis, according to NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport. The 49ers are expected to sign 18 undrafted free agents to contracts, and with 73 players already on the roster, they needed one more spot to get to the 90-man limit.

The 49ers spent a fourth round pick on Davis back in 2015, but he never panned out. He missed most of his rookie year due to injury, and when he did play, he was ineffective. He rushed for 1.7 yards per carry on 35 attempts, which I believe was one of the lowest YPCs ever for that many attempts. Last season, he appeared in eight games and rushed 19 times for 50 yards and a touchdown.

The 49ers spent a fourth round pick this year on Utah’s Joe Williams. He will compete with Tim Hightower and DuJuan Harris for backup work, and could emerge as a busy back behind Carlos Hyde. The 49ers are also signing UDFA Matt Breida out of Georgia Southern.
