The San Francisco 49ers announced their UDFA signings on Thursday, but they also announced they had signed six of their draft picks. The 2011 CBA means long gone are the days where nobody signs until the middle of the summer, and holdouts into the early part of training camp are a little more common.
The six players signed represented the team’s entire day three haul. Our friend at Over The Cap put together a detailed look at rookie pool estimates to determine each contract. We don’t have the contracts in front of us, but because of the rookie wage scale, we can get a pretty good idea of where they stand.
Each player signs a four-year deal, and gets a signing bonus. Players in the first round have a fifth year team option in their contract. Players in rounds three through seven are eligible for the proven performance escalator. This is based entirely on playing time. To earn it, a player must have played in 35 percent of his team’s offensive or defensive snaps in two of his first three seasons, or averaged 35 percent playing time cumulatively during that period. It is a non-negotiable raise in pay. First and second round picks are not eligible for this, but can instead negotiate performance incentives based on playing time.
Here is a preliminary look at how the 49ers day three rookie contracts might look.
