49ers minicamp recap: Time to get overly excited about the rookies!

The 49ers rookies got in their first practice session.

The San Francisco 49ers held their first practice of rookie minicamp in front of the media, and naturally it is time to get overly excited about things. Or overly pessimistic when bad news arrives, right?

As expected, Reuben Foster did not participate in the practice session. He was in full uniform, but he as he mentioned previously, he will be limited through the offseason workout program. The plan is to have him full-go at training camp.

Solomon Thomas made his first appearance, with Charles Haley on hand to observe. The most important takeaway? It sounds like Thomas is in good physical shape. I still remember A.J. Jenkins and other 49ers rookies showing up to minicamp out of shape. Here are a couple videos.

I’ve embedded the media Twitter list down below, so you can go through some of the tweets and pick the rookie that most excites you. Also, Tracy Sandler was on hand for practice, and did some Facebook Live to discuss what she saw, so give that a watch here.

Some highlights would include wide receiver Kendrick Bourne finishing practice with a diving catch. All it takes is one to get on people’s radar, right? It sounds like C.J. Beathard got the bulk of the work at quarterback. The 49ers signed Southern Miss QB Nick Mullens and brought in Nevada’s Tyler Stewart for a tryout. Speaking of Beathard, Lorenzo Jerome had a nice interception in practice. I don’t doubt that Jerome is going to become a fan favorite among the UDFAs in training camp.
