The San Francisco 49ers signed 18 UDFAs this week, who joined a whole host of other additions the past two weeks. With all those moves and 14 releases, the 49ers are up to their 90-man roster limit.
The 49ers brought in an additional 56 tryout candidates for this weekend’s rookie minicamp. Head coach Kyle Shanahan talked earlier this week about how his past teams have had the occasional tryout candidate work out for the team. Taylor Gabriel is the most notable example he mentioned.
The front office has made it pretty clear that jobs are not safe, regardless of who you are. In the first 13 roster cuts, they had no problem releasing the recently signed Jayson DiManche to make room for new options. DiManche was not a clear long-term option, but considering how recently he was signed it was a little surprising. That being said, John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan both said last weekend that you’re on the team until they can find a way to improve.
The 49ers will finish their rookie minicamp this weekend, and then continue along with phase two of the offseason workout program. I would not be at all surprised to see the 49ers decide to make one or two additional moves after rookie minicamp with a tryout player or two. I don’t know who they would be, but I wouldn’t be surprised if one or two tryout players stood out this weekend.
