The San Francisco 49ers signed Baylor wide receiver K.D. Cannon as an undrafted free agent, and a lot of people thought he had as good a chance as any of the UDFAs to make the 49ers roster. Not so fast, my friends.
ESPN-Central Texas radio host David Smoak tweeted on Sunday morning that the 49ers had released Cannon. Matt Barrows has since reported that Cannon’s agent confirmed the news. Prior to Barrows’ tweet, Cannon retweeted the report, and then a video that sums it up pretty well.

Cannon received a decent-sized guarantee to sign with the 49ers, getting a $40,000 guarantee on salary, and a $5,000 signing bonus. When the 49ers invited 56 players to their rookie minicamp alongside their 18 UDFAs, I figured there was a decent chance they would release one or two UDFAs for tryout candidates. I did not expect it to be Cannon.
The 49ers now have an open roster spot to sign one of their tryout players. We’ll see who gets the nod.
