Bills pursuing free agent WR Jeremy Maclin

The 49ers might not get a chance to make something happen with Jeremy Maclin.

The Kansas City Chiefs surprised the football world on Friday when they released wide receiver Jeremy Maclin. The move cleared significant cap space, but the decision also took away one of Alex Smith’s key weapons.

On Saturday, we discussed the value of the San Francisco 49ers pursuing Maclin. They could use more wide receivers, and their additions this offseason have been primarily veterans. Maclin would provide them with a significant boost in depth, and help get the offense moving in the right direction.

However, it would appear another team is looking to make something happen. Bills running back LeSean McCoy said people should not be surprised if Maclin ends up with the Bills. Now, HuffPost Sports Columnist Jordan Schultz is reporting the team is in preliminary discussions with Maclin.

The Bills have Sammy Watkins atop their depth chart, but declined to pick up his fifth year option. Buffalo lacks a consistent No. 2 option, and Watkins’ foot injury leaves him in question. Maclin makes a lot of sense as Tyrod Taylor looks to get on track under the new coaching staff.

This is all still early, but I imagine Maclin will sign somewhere before the end of the week. It’s possible he does multiple visits, but if Buffalo puts on a full-court press, they could very well lock him down. It’s possible Maclin will prefer to wait for the offseason workout program to end, but I think we see a team push hard this week.
