The San Francisco 49ers return to Santa Clara for training camp in just over two weeks, and in the meantime, players are gearing up for the coming work. Rookie linebacker Reuben Foster is getting work in at the 49ers facility. Arik Armstead, DeForest Buckner, Eli Harold and Ronald Blair are doing work with Michael Bennett in Hawaii. And Carlos Hyde and Bruce Ellington have been getting workouts in down in Miami.
We can add Brian Hoyer and some of his wide receivers to the mix. Back in June, Hoyer told the media at minicamp that he was going to organize a throwing session later in the summer before training camp. Matt Barrows is reporting the event kicked off on Monday at the Southern Methodist campus in Dallas. Barrows wrote that Marquise Goodwin is expected to attend, but the rest of the attendees is unknown for the time being.
Fooch’s update: The 49ers informed Barrows the players on hand included:
QB Brian Hoyer
QB Matt Barkley
QB C.J. Beathard
QB Nick Mullens
WR Victor Bolden Jr.
WR Kendrick Bourne
WR DeAndre Carter
WR Marquise Goodwin
WR Jeremy Kerley
WR Aldrick Robinson
WR DeAndre Smelter
WR Trent Taylor
TE Cole Hikutini
TE George Kittle
TE Vance McDonald
RB Kapri Bibbs
Barrows reported the session will last three days. Players will then go their separate ways and meet back up in Santa Clara in two weeks. A throwing session won’t remove all the rust that can accumulate between minicamp and training camp, but it helps get players a little more on the same page. And given the new offense being implemented along with a sizable overhaul to the roster, the more time together, the better. Brian Hoyer has experience in Shanahan’s system, and if they can get Pierre Garçon, Aldrick Robinson and Logan Paulsen down there, all the better!
