John Lynch has repeatedly emphasized how much he likes Reuben Foster’s football makeup and dedication to the game. There are off-field and injury concerns surrounding the pick, but if he stays healthy and out of trouble, the sky’s the limit.
Foster is a big tackler with a nose for the ball, and one former competitor pointed out just how great he was at it. The SEC is holding a multi-day media event in preparation for the upcoming college football season, and Arkansas center Frank Ragnow was extremely complimentary of Foster. He said the Alabama linebacker was the best defensive player he had faced to date, and that his ability to know what was coming was “freaky.”
Arkansas C Frank Ragnow on #49ers LB Reuben Foster: "He knew some of the plays that were coming before they happened. It was just freaky."

Foster is finishing up his recovery from a torn rotator cuff as training camp approaches. He is working out at the team’s facility this offseason, and by recent accounts seems to be on track to be ready for the regular season. The big question is how quickly he is going at full speed in training camp. The shoulder seems to be coming along, but that physical at the start of camp will provide a useful update.
The defense seems to be in a position where they can work him into the mix at a slower pace. He can potentially focus on the nickel role initially and build from there. But the big question is when he’ll see his first game action. Will it be the first preseason game of the year, or will they wait a little longer?
