Golden Nuggets: Kirk Cousins in 2018

The 49ers may get the chance at their franchise quarterback in 2018. That could be a player they draft or they can get Kirk Cousins, who has been rumored to want a reunion with his former offensive coordinator, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan. Washington and Kirk was unable to agree to a long-term deal, so he will play under the franchise tag for a 2nd consecutive season. There were reports that the 49ers would try to trade for Kirk this offseason, but it never materialized.

This season, the 49ers will field Brian Hoyer, Matt Barkley, and C.J. Beathard on the team. Neither Hoyer or Barkley are the future of the team. The idea that they could get Kirk next offseason and pair him with Kyle Shanahan may be too hard to resist. They will have the cap space available and do not have their franchise quarterback on their current roster unless C.J. ends up being it. While the 49ers should have a high draft pick next offseason that they could use to get a quarterback, John Lynch and Kyle may prefer to grab Kirk.

Washington could be doing the 49ers a favor by not agreeing to a contract with Cousins. The Kyle Shanahan - Kirk Cousins reunion could be a reality next season in Santa Clara.
