Tom Gamble joining Jim Harbaugh’s Michigan staff

Will they eventually return to the NFL together?

Here is your random little news of the day. Tim Kawakami is reporting that Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh is expected to hire former San Francisco 49ers assistant general manager Tom Gamble to join his staff. He would not be a coach, but it sounds like would instead assist in football operations.

Gamble spent 29 seasons in the NFL, including 10 with the 49ers. He worked for the team from 2005 to 2012, and then left to work for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2013 and 2014. He was viewed by many as a guy necessary to make the Jim Harbaugh-Trent Baalke relationship work. That followed when he was a bridge between Chip Kelly and Trent Baalke.

When the 49ers announced in February that Gamble was leaving the organization, John Lynch said, “After working together over the last month, Tom and I agreed that it would be in both of our best interests for him to pursue other opportunities.” It is not surprising to see this follow with him re-joining Jim Harbaugh. I think Harbaugh eventually ends up back in the NFL, and it will be fascinating to see if Gamble is the guy that joins him in a major personnel role.
