Golden Nuggets: Training Camp Battles

Football is officially back this week when the 49ers start their training camp on Thursday. Their 1st practice is scheduled to be on Friday. Coming off a 2-14 record and with new leadership in place, the competition for roster spots should be tight.

The best position battle should be on the defensive line. The last 3 top picks the 49ers had were used on the defensive line. Arik Armstead, DeForest Buckner, and Solomon Thomas were consecutive 1st round picks the last 3 years. They will be a big part of the 49ers defense this year. The 49ers also have added players this offseason to their stable of returning players. Earl Mitchell and Elvis Dumervil were signed and could have a big impact in improving the defensive line play. The 49ers have already said there will be rotations on the defensive line this season, but who will get the playing time will be decided at camp.

An interesting development leaked today regarding Carlos Hyde. Reports have surfaced that Hyde could be cut from the 49ers. Hyde has been the bright spot on the team recently, but injuries have hit him the last couple of seasons. I don’t expect the 49ers to cut him, but it would not be very shocking. Hyde may be the starter to begin with, but his spot is not secure. The battle for his backup will be from veteran Tim Hightower or talented rookie Joe Williams. Williams could push for Hyde’s starting spot. But realistically, Hyde starts the season and his spot is his unless his production tumbles or Williams has a breakout season.
